The Jackson Symphony's principal viola is Clyde McKaney, a Jackson native who began his musical studies with the violin as a 6th grader in the Jackson Public School’s string program under the tutelage of violinist and music teacher, Eva Hamilton. He then studied privately with Luella Sober of Jackson. While a sophomore at Jackson High School, Clyde joined the Jackson Symphony and began studying viola with Valerie Kuinka.

As a student at the University of Michigan, Clyde was assistant principal viola of the University Philharmonic Orchestra. His teachers were principal violist of the Detroit Symphony, Nathan Gordon, and viola soloist, Donald McInnes. While studying viola at Michigan State University with Robert Dan, Clyde was principal viola of the MSU Symphony Orchestra.  He was also appointed principal viola of the Battle Creek Symphony and assistant principal viola of the Lansing Symphony.

While studying with Joseph Fuchs of the Julliard School in New York, Clyde was appointed principal viola of the Julliard Bach Chamber Orchestra. He performed the Bach double violin concerto with Mr. Fuchs and the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, Glenn Dicterow.

Clyde now lives in Jackson where he enjoys teaching violin and viola, playing in the orchestra, cooking, and riding his horse!
