Class Summary: This series will enrich the enjoyment of music by drawing attention to what makes up what we are hearing when we listen closely. Have you ever considered Beethoven as a funny man? Historical research shows that when classical music was composed the audiences were very conscious of its details and how they compounded into a musical experience. Issues of expectation, surprise, humor, as well as awe and the sublime can be better understood when we know what to listen for.
- Session 1: I Know What You’re Hearing, But What Are You Listening To?
- Session 2: Can a Song Tell a Story If You Don’t Know The Words?
- Session 3: Where Have I Heard That Tune Before?
- Session 4: If Beethoven Were a Comedian, Would He Use a Rubber Chicken in His Act?
- Session 5: How Can I Tell That’s Mozart and Not Tchaikovsky Trying to Sound Like Mozart?
Dr. Andrew Mead is professor of Music Theory, University of Michigan. He is also a composer, church organist, member of the JSO Board of Directors and resident of Brooklyn.
