     Organized in 1948, the mission of the Jackson Symphony Guild continues unchanged - to promote the enjoyment of music through volunteer and financial support of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra.  As the Orchestra has grown, so has the Jackson Symphony Guild.  Today, we play a major role in a number of areas including fundraising and educational and audience development projects.  With all that we do, the Jackson Symphony Guild needs your help.  Getting involved with some of the Guild's programs is a great way to make new friends and support the arts in our community.  After reading what some of our volunteers have to say about their experience with Guild activities, we hope you will join us!

A Message from the Guild President

Dear Symphony Supporters,

For the next year it will be my honor and challenge to be the President of the Jackson Symphony Guild’s Board of Directors.  My vision is:

  • increased involvement of Guild members in both Guild and JSO activities;

  • increased financial support by the Guild of the JSO;

  • increased awareness of our community in the benefits of having a Symphony Orchestra and Music School in Jackson.

In these difficult economic times, symphony orchestras from Pennsylvania to Texas have been forced to close their operations due to a lack of financial support from their communities. Our community values the arts and the impact that music education has on young people. Just as exercise keeps your body healthy, music enriches your spirit and playing a musical instrument challenges your mind.

Our Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music Group bring us food for our souls. If you didn’t see Tosca, you missed a superb performance. We are so fortunate to have a well-run, financially sound Symphony Orchestra and Music School in Jackson.

Maestro Osmond wears two hats – that of conductor and that of chief operating officer of the JSO. His vision of and dedication to music appreciation inspires his staff, musicians, students and volunteers to work to make the Jackson Symphony Orchestra and Music School something we all can be proud to be part of.

Your support is what has made the difference in keeping the appreciation of music alive in Jackson. Thank you. I encourage you to continue to support the JSO in whatever manner you can, be it season tickets, music lessons, chamber music concert attendance, sponsorship of performances, advertising in concert programs or involvement in the Guild. There is a direct correlation between the efforts of the Guild volunteers and the amount of money the Guild is able to give to the JSO. If you have any ideas or suggestions that may help the Guild to be more successful please feel free to call me at 783-5709.  I look forward to meeting you at a Guild or JSO activity this year.

Children’s Music Programs
Opportunities to volunteer at special children’s concerts and in school programs.

Concert Greeters
Friendly greeters from the Guild are needed to warmly welcome Jackson Symphony Orchestra concertgoers as they arrive at the Potter Center.

Guest Artist Hospitality

Volunteer hosts and hostesses provide lodging, meals and transportation for guest artists and their families as needed.

History Book

Members of this small committee, chaired by an Historian, photograph Guild and JSO events, collect newspaper articles, and save other printed materials pertaining to the organizations. The information is assembled in scrapbooks and may be viewed at the Guild Office throughout the year or at the Guild’s Annual Meeting in May.

Holiday Ball Fund-Raiser

This gala dinner-dance, held the first Saturday in December, is the Guild’s largest fund-raiser and it requires dozens of volunteers to plan the event, mail invitations, contact potential contributors, prepare publicity, obtain raffle prizes, set up auction items, put together a program book, and decorate for the event.

Jazz & Blues Fund-Raiser

Committee members contact musicians, make arrangements with a restaurant, prepare publicity and sell tickets to this annual dinner program, which features several jazz musicians or bands

Jewelry Sales

Guild volunteers collect jewelry and fashion accessories from community contributors and sell the items during concert intermissions and other events.

Membership

Members of this very important committee maintain membership lists, coordinate the Guild’s Annual Meeting, contact prospective members, plan a reception for new members and publish the Guild’s annual membership directory. Volunteers with a variety of skills are needed, including people who enjoy planning parties, decorating, preparing printed materials on a computer, talking with potential members or addressing invitations.

Newsletter

Members of the newsletter committee produce the “Interlude” newsletter, which keeps JSO contributors, season ticket holders and members of the Guild informed about activities and upcoming events at the JSO, Community Music School and Guild. Volunteers who enjoy writing, taking photographs or designing page layouts on their computer are needed for this committee.

Marketing

Committee members work on ways to advertise the Jackson Symphony Guild including brochure design and mailings.

Office Volunteers
Volunteers answer phones, sell tickets and assist with office work.

Post-concert Afterglows

The JSO sometimes holds a reception - for contributors, guest artists and others - immediately following a concert in the Subscription Series. On these occasions, a volunteer host or hostess is needed for the reception. Volunteers also are needed to provide refreshments.

Symphony Guild Singles
Are you a single Symphony goer? As a member of the Jackson Symphony Guild, you are invited to join other Guild singles for dinner before the concert.
