Edith Hines

Violin Soloist

October 6, 2001

Edith Hines, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, began violin lessons at the age of five with Charlene Boehm of Kalamazoo's Young Strings Academy and subsequently with Philip Mason. She made her recital debut in her hometown at the age of nine and her concerto debut several months later with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. Since then, she has performed as soloist with several other orchestras and as a recitalist, including a performance on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series. In 2000, Edith was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, an honor which included the opportunity to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Other honors include receiving first place and performance prize in the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Young Musician's Competition in 1999 and winning the Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition in 1997. An avid chamber musician, Edith has been a member of the Chinook Quartet and the Ansonia Trio at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Edith's past teachers include Karey Johnson, Philip Mason, and David Updegraff; she is currently a student of Donald Weilerstein at the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM). In addition to working toward a Bachelor of Music degree at that school, she is pursuing a B.A. in mathematics through a joint degree program between CIM and Case Western Reserve University.

Edith's instrument is provided by a scholarship grant from the Virtu Foundation.
