Barbara Butler and Charles Geyer have been performing as a double-trumpet duo since the mid 1970s when they first appeared under Leonard Slatkin with the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra in Chicago. Since that time they have appeared as duo-soloists with orchestras throughout the United States and Europe, including performance with the Real Orquesta Sinfonica de Sevilla in Spain, Lieksa Brass Week in Finland and with the famed Eastman Wind Ensemble in a concert tour of Japan. Every year Butler and Geyer are heard world-wide on broadcasts and recordings with Chicago's Music of the Baroque, with which they have appeared as featured soloists since 1975. In addition, Butler, and Geyer are members of the premiere chamber music ensemble - Chicago Chamber Musicians, and can be heard on recordings and broadcasts with this group. Both former full time orchestral trumpet players, Butler and Geyer have turned their successful careers to chamber and solo performing. They met in Chicago when Butler took over the Principal Trumpet position with the Grant Park Symphony as Geyer left that position to expand his duties with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia. A year later Butler left Chicago to play Co-Principal Trumpet with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, returning in the summers to the Grant Park Symphony. Two years later Geyer, former Principal Trumpet with Lyric Opera Orchestra and a member of the Chicago Symphony for 12 years, left Chicago to become Principal Trumpet with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. In 1980, both resigned their orchestral posts to become Professors of Trumpet at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York where they have been featured in concerts, recording, national broadcasts and tours with the Eastman Brass and Eastman Virtuosi. In 1997, Butler and Geyer joined Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois as Professors of Trumpet. Butler and Geyer continue to perform as Co-Principal Trumpets with the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra and occasionally guest with orchestras such as St Louis, Houston, Montreal, New York and Chicago. They have also performed with the DaCarnera Society (Houston), Kapalua Festival (Hawaii), Strings in the Mountains (Steamboat Springs, Colorado), Mostly Mozart and Minnesota Rug Concert Series to name a few. Butler and Geyer have released one recording of Music for Two Trumpets and Organ on Gasparo in addition to recordings with Eastman Brass and Music of the Baroque. They are also active in commissioning and premiering new works by composers such as Vern Reynolds, John Harbison, Donald Hunsberger, Samuel Adler, Augusta Read Thomas, Jeff Beal, Brian Prechti, and Anthony Piog. Barbara Butler and Charles Geyer presently make their home on a farm in upstate New York that they share with their daughter, Jorie, and numerous horses, dogs and cats.
