Born in Palatine, Illinois, Mr. Schmidt attended the Eastman School of Music receiving its highest honors, where he studied ,A ith Eugene List. The winner of numerous competitions, he gave debut recitals in Chicago, New York, and London and has since appeared on stages across the United States.

Cyril Smith called him "...a pianist of great sensitivity and almost unbelievably brilliant and powerful bravura. " In addition to an active solo career (his repertoire includes eighteen concerti), he is a much sought-after accompanist, having some forty years of experience in that field. Among those he has worked with are Lucia Popp, Suzanne Mentzer, Bonita Boyd, Olaf Baer, and Donald Peck. Mr. Schmidt has played with many chamber groups, including the VerDehr Trio, and was for seven seasons an accompanist for the Chicago Symphony Chorus, where he worked with many of the great conductors of our time.

He has, for many years, collaborated with his brother, choreographer, Gordon Pierce Schmidt, presently the director of the Grand Rapids Ballet. Mr. Schmidt is the composer of the ballet "The Gift of the Magi" and the arranger of the ballet "Hansel and Gretel". both commissioned by Ballet Chicago.
