Patricia Holland is principal bassoon of the Fox Valley (Appleton, WI) and Central Wisconsin (Stevens Point, WI) Symphony Orchestras, as well as and the Pine Mountain and Superior Music Festivals in Michigan's upper peninsula. She also serves as contrabassoonist with the Peninsula Music Festival in Door County, WI. Prior to moving to Wisconsin, she was principal bassoon in the Jackson (Michigan) Symphony Orchestra, and frequently appeared with other Michigan symphonies including the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Lansing Symphony Orchestras. Holland is a frequent soloist and recitalist. In 1997 she gave the Wisconsin premier of the new concerto for Bassoon of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Taafe Zwilich. In 1998 she presented a world premier performance of a piece she commissioned at the Annual Conference of the International Double Reed Society in Tempe Arizona. Since living in Wisconsin, she has several times performed on live broadcasts of Wisconsin Public Radio. Dr. Holland is Artist/Teacher of Bassoon at The University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and also chair of Music History and Literature and head of the Graduate Program in Music. Before joining the UWSP faculty in 1994, she taught bassoon at Hillsdale College and Albion College in Michigan, and also maintained a private studio. She also taught chamber music, double reed methods, and music theory in colleges in Southern Michigan. Professor Holland earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The University of Michigan in 1993 under the tutelage of Richard Beene and L. Hugh Cooper. Her Bachelor’s degree is also from The University of Michigan, while the Masters degree was attained at Michigan State University, studying with Edgar Kirk and Martha Bowman. |
