JSO’s 68th Season

JSO Escape 2017-2018 Season

Escape! The Jackson Symphony Orchestra’s 68th season welcomes you to turn off your cell phone, unplug and escape into the sounds of a diverse array of composers. In my debut season as Music Director of the JSO you will hear the familiar sounds of Beethoven, Mozart and Dvořák alongside recent works by living composers like Philip Glass, Lowell Liebermann, Fazil Say and our own, Jonathan Bruce Brown. Each Signature Series program pairs virtuosic soloists from around the world with some of the most recognizable works by the great composers. As the sun warms your faces, the sounds of John Williams will warm your soul in our Summer Pops concert at the Riverwalk Amphitheatre. Winter introduces an exciting collaboration with Ballet Chelsea to bring you the seasonal family favorite, The Nutcracker. We will also be offering a free event (Music on Tap’s Summer Solstice), newly designed educational concerts and outreach performances in hospitals. Finally, be sure to check out our new Music on Tap series (formally the Affinity series). Enjoy all that Downtown Jackson has to offer with some live music and drinks.

Treat your valentine to an evening of American music culminating in George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. Instead of the 3 B’s — Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, we have the 3 G’s — Gershwin, Glass, Gould. As familiar as Gershwin’s music is, you will be surprised by two works that are equally entertaining and, at times, treat the orchestra like a jazz band. The Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet joins the JSO for this celebration of American music.

Virtuosic, Venezuelan-American pianist Vanessa Perez joins the JSO on Mozart’s 23rd Piano Concerto. Members of the JSO’s string section open the program with Bach’s uplifting 3rd Brandenburg Concerto. Beethoven’s jubilant 8th symphony closes the program.

The Jackson Symphony Orchestra presents two premieres. We open with a world premiere by Jonathan Bruce Brown, the JSO’s Composer-in-Residence, called Skyward! The work is a fanfare for orchestra commemorating the inaugural season of Matthew Aubin’s tenure as Music Director of the JSO. Cellist Julian Schwarz joins the JSO to present the Michigan premiere of Lowell Liebermann’s 2017 Cello Concerto. Featuring African-American spirituals, Dvorak’s New World Symphony concludes the concert and our season.
