SUMMER SONGS: AN OUTDOOR CONCERT

Join the Jackson Symphony Orchestra and Dahlem for a FREE outdoor concert performance! Bring your own lawn chair or blanket and sit under the trees or out in the grass and listen to a selection of summer songs performed by the Jackson Symphony Orchestra string quartet. The performance will be held outdoors at the Dahlem Environmental Education Center pavilion, 7117 South Jackson Road, at 7pm. Please feel free to arrive early and enjoy a walk on the trails, play at the nature playscape, or stop by the exhibit room and gift shop.

Ji Hyan Kim
Violin

A Korean-born Australian-American violinist Dr. Ji Hyun Kim is a sought-after soloist, chamber musician, educator, and music director. Ji Hyun received a Bachelor of Music Performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australia, and completed her Master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees at Michigan State University, with cognate studies in Viola Performance, Music Therapy, and Contemporary Art Music.

Ji Hyun has made numerous media appearances worldwide and has performed in major cities in South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, Luxemburg, Austria, and the United States. Her outstanding musicality has been recognized through her success in national and international competitions hosted by the Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Foundation, Yamaha Music Society, Chamber Music New Zealand, International Grieg Society, and the International Golden Classical Music Awards. Ji Hyun has also served as a concertmaster and principal violinist of various ensembles and orchestras, such as Sydney Sinfonia, Ad Libitum, Musique 21, the Lansing Symphony, and Jackson Symphony Orchestras.

As a dedicated educator and music director, Ji Hyun has traveled nationally and internationally to adjudicate auditions and competitions, present master classes and lecture recitals, run chamber and orchestral clinics, and lead community engagement workshops for various audiences. After eleven years of serving as the Director of String Orchestra and Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at Spring Arbor University, Ji Hyun joined Albion College in 2021 as the Director of Orchestra and String Studies.

Ji Hyun is also the Founder and Artistic Director of ConTempus Initiative, a Michigan-based contemporary music collective committed to presenting creative and collaborative performances of the works composed by diverse living composers and overlooked women composers to connect with today’s audiences.

Sarah Patterson
Violin

Sarah Patterson is a violinist and teacher based in Lansing, Michigan. Having discovered a passion for education, Sarah’s teaching career has included everything from early childhood music classes and private lessons to orchestra sectionals and coordinating a violin outreach program in schools. Sarah received her bachelor of music degree in violin performance from Washburn University and a master’s degree in violin performance from Michigan State University.

Sarah is a founding member and administrator for ConTempus Initiative and the ConTempus String Quartet and has also performed with a variety of orchestras and chamber ensembles including Jackson Symphony Orchestra, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Topeka Symphony Orchestra, Fetter String Quartet, and Moirae Trio. In addition to classical music, Sarah enjoys playing a variety of world music and has performed with Slivovitz (klezmer music), Wisaal (Arabic-fusion) and Limerick (Irish music).

Lauren Hansen
Viola

Lauren Hansen is a violinist and violist based in Lansing, Michigan. She is a long-standing member of the Lansing and Jackson Symphony Orchestras and past chair of the LSO’s Artistic Advisory Committee. As a freelance musician, Lauren has performed with various acts from Mannheim Steamroller and touring Broadway productions to Johnny Mathis and Lil’ Darlins Vaudeville. She can be heard on the soundtrack to the documentary Hmong Memory at the Crossroads.

A veteran instructor, Lauren maintains a busy teaching studio and has served as clinician for Michigan State University College of Music, Mid-Michigan Youth Symphony, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra’s Side-by-Side mentorship program and Symphony Youth Competition, and numerous area high school orchestras. She is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas and a former Suzuki Instructor for the Michigan State University Community Music School.

Lauren holds a Master of Public Health from the renowned University of Michigan School of Public Health. She’s been a featured speaker nationwide for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and was integral to the creation and development of programs benefiting youth living with multiple sclerosis.

Jinhyun Kim
Cello

Jinhyun Kim is a cellist from South Korea known for her dynamic performances and versatility. She is a member of Jackson Symphony Orchestra, and also serves as the Principal Cellist of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Principal Cellist of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, she performs as a substitute musician with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Opera. A dedicated advocate for contemporary music, she is a core member of ConTempus Initiative, a new music ensemble based in mid-Michigan.

Jinhyun’s recent performance highlights include a solo appearance with the Livingston Symphony Orchestra, where she performed as a concerto soloist to great acclaim, and two performances at Carnegie Hall, including as a first prize winner of the 2019 Golden Classical Music Awards. She has also collaborated with renowned conductors at the National Orchestral Institute Festival, contributing to recordings for Naxos Records.

Beyond performing, Jinhyun is a dedicated educator, serving as an Adjunct Professor of Cello at Albion College and Spring Arbor University, as well as a faculty member at the Flint School of Performing Arts. She is a registered Suzuki teacher and a member of the American String Teachers Association.

Jinhyun’s career has been shaped by collaborations with prominent conductors and mentors, and her performances have received acclaim from major publications. Her dedication to both performance and education continues to inspire and impact the classical music community.
