2018-19 String Auditions

The Jackson Symphony Orchestra announces open auditions for the 2018-19 season. Available contract positions include three (3) section violin, one (1) section viola, and two (2) section cello chairs. Winners will be offered a one-year contract for the 2018-19 season. Based on these auditions, musicians may also be added to our non-contract supplemental musician list.

Auditions shall take place on Saturday, September 8, 2018. Auditions will begin at noon (12p) at the Jackson Symphony Orchestra Hall located at 215 W. Michigan Ave, Jackson MI, 49201. Applicants will submit a cover letter, a one-page resume highlighting performance experience (include a current e-mail address), and a $40 deposit to JSO personnel manager, David Lamse, at the mailing address above. Please mark all written correspondence “℅ David Lamse, JSO Personnel Manager.” No materials will be accepted after August 31, 2018. Auditions times will be e-mailed once all materials have been received. The $40 deposit will be returned at audition check-in. Personal check deposits should be made out to Jackson Symphony Orchestra. Please direct all inquiries to jacksonsymphonypm@gmail.com.

The 2018-19 pay rate is $70 per service for all section string players, with a $25/travel allowance per round trip (outside of 30 miles from the rehearsal/performance venue). A typical Jackson Symphony Orchestra season includes 5 mainstage programs (1 reduced), one educational concert, several pops concerts, and many additional opportunities for performance and outreach.

 

Audition Repertoire

The audition repertoire is below. The candidate is responsible for providing their own music. The first round of these auditions will be screened; subsequent rounds may or may not be screened.

VIOLIN:

  • Mozart – Symphony No. 40 (4th mvmt. Mm. 1-34 no repeats)
  • Strauss – Don Juan (1st page)

VIOLA:

  • Mozart – Symphony No. 35 (4th mvmt. Exposition)
  • Shostakovich – Symphony No. 5 (1st mvmt. Mm. 15-17; mm. 32-36;)
  • Strauss – Don Juan (1st page)

CELLO:

SOLO plus

  • Beethoven – Symphony No. 5 (3rd mvmt. mm 1-18; C maj key change, first 18 mm. )
  • Debussy – La Mer (quartet passage)
  • Strauss – Don Juan (1st page)
